Calling all Tee Fashionistas

Calling all budding designers and fashionistas! You’ve just stumbled across a unique site called DirtyLaunderette.

It kicks off with a cool flash page (is this standard now?!?), where you enter what looks to be a 60s launderette, the more you use the flash page the more you discover about it. Try pressin the red lights on the washers., when your done playing click on the notice board to enter.

So what’s DirtyLaunderette all about?

Think MySpace or Facebook, but focused specifically at the fashion world. You can design tees and present your masterpiece to the DirtyLaunderette community. They have their say and if you’re good enough and edgy enough, your shirt might just get printed! But don’t worry you can sway the votes by inviting your friends to join and vote on your styles! (At least that’s what I’d be doing!)

So how does it work and what can you do with DirtyLaunderette?

At it’s most basic level the site comprises a design community, consisting of Designers and other users and a shop or tee marketplace.

I will quickly go into the Design process, but designing isn’t my thing. But it’s good to know how the tees get there in the first place! As you’d expect Designers create designs and put them to the community to vote on. The community then basically chooses the designs that appeal to them most. According to the website the designs are assigned by designers to each voting cycle (one runs every three weeks) and then DirtyLaunderette provides cash prizes, free tees and creates the tees of those winning designs!

Very cool for those with design flair. A bit of extra cash, a chance to get noticed by a larger audience and a way to get bragging rights with your friends, with you (and them) wearing a tee that you designed. Pretty cool hey!

But they haven’t forgotten about the average user (me!), who like my good self doesn’t have a designing bone in their body! Don’t get me wrong I love fashion and the tees available to date are great, but I was just not created to be creative. So what’s in it for people like me? Well first and foremost joining the site is free (as you’d expect!). When joining you get to setup your profile including a picture, and a few tidbits about yourself (what you like and don’t like in design or the world in general).

I get to purchase tees from the DirtyLaunderette shop, selected from those brethren that are more design savvy then my good self. But what’s great is just by joining and voting on other’s designs I get rewarded. And eventually I will get my hands on a free tee! Through a credit points system you get points for all different types of activities. Some of the things you get points for include voting on your favourite designs, purchasing tees and even adding pictures onto your profile of you and your mates wearing a DirtyLaunderette tee! According to the site you can also get credit points when you invite friends and they purchase tees. (And yes before you ask I have been inviting all my friends to join just to be sure I get my hands on a free tee faster!).

It has a few of the other aspects you’d expect within a community platform, such as linking up with friends and message boards on profiles, designs and the tees.

As a community member you can also upgrade your profile to a designer and contribute designs to the community. Me, well I won’t be doing any such thing. I don’t want to be known as the laughing stock of DirtyLaunderette. I will leave it to those more creative types. I’m happy to kick back purchase their works and earn my free tees.

You too can join the growing community of designers and fashionistas at DirtyLaunderette.com.
